What Are the Symptoms of Cataract?

Cataract is the loss of transparency of the natural lens in the eye and the decrease in light transmittance. Cataracts can occur in any age group. In general, we can list the symptoms of cataract as follows.

  • Blurred vision, low vision
  • Difficulty driving at night
  • Increased sensitivity to light and light reflections
  • Needing brighter light for reading and other activities
  • Watching a circular shaped light cloud called a halo around the light
  • Frequent changes in glasses and contact lens sizes
  • Colors appear paler
  • Double vision in one eye

In the initial stages of cataract, loss of transparency in the lens may occur in only a portion of the lens. This may not affect vision much at first. As the cataract increases over time, the level of vision will decrease.

Congenital Cataract Symptoms

In some cases, congenital cataracts can occur in babies. In this case, usually the parents see the baby in the white color of the baby’s eye. When they apply to the doctor, they may learn that they have cataracts. Cataract symptoms in babies can of course remain hidden because the baby cannot speak. For this reason, it is very important for babies to have regular eye examinations.

Cataract Symptoms Due to Cortisol Use

Cataracts may occur due to the use of cortisol in people who use cortisol for any reason. This type of cataract is usually more uncomfortable in high-light environments. When they enter environments with bright light levels, people often report that their vision is reduced and they are uncomfortable with the light.

Age-Related Cataract Symptoms

Age-related cataracts usually manifest as a general decrease in vision. People need brighter light levels to see up close and especially when reading. Age-related cataracts usually occur over the age of 55.

In old age cataracts, sometimes the cataract makes the person myopic. This can enable the person to see up close a little better than before. However, the concept of ‘good’ here is relative. In other words, the person may start to see a little while not seeing near at all, but the quality of vision will not be good. The distance vision level worsens considerably.

Cataract Symptoms Due to Eye Trauma

Sometimes, cataracts may appear months or even years later due to impacts to the eye. These types of cataracts may also have other symptoms. Such cataracts are called traumatic cataracts. Traumatic cataract surgeries are riskier than normal cataract surgeries. Because in this type of cataracts, complications occur because the filaments that hold the lens in place are damaged. Traumatic cataract surgeries should be performed by experienced physicians.
